Read this while I was over in Ireland and meant to comment so, mea culpa.
Funny that your post came when I was in a land with limited internet access and zero-cell service (I left it at home). The 30 minutes I logged onto the internet at a cafe was spent trying hastily to catch up but, often I found myself drowning in the digital river. There was as certain thrill though to being submerged and instantly reconnected to people back at home.
On your point of careerism I have to agree. It is one of the major obstacles causing such disconnects in higher education. Speaking from experience I am constantly bombarded by the “what job I will get with a history degree” question (apparently being a teacher or working at a museum are my only two options). Why won’t people just let me enjoy college? For the first time in a long time I am enjoying being a student.
